Oxford Economics: The Bank of Japan may accelerate interest rate hikes to deal with the depreciation of the yen and inflation
2026-08-31 15:32:24
According to CoinMeta, economist Shigeto Nagai from the Oxford Institute for Economics stated that the Bank of Japan is expected to raise interest rates in September and December this year, and again in April 2027, raising the policy rate to 1.75%. This forecast for the policy rate is higher than previous predictions, and the pace of interest rate hikes is also faster. He noted that the Bank of Japan aims to address the pressures on the yen and the rising inflation expectations. However, he added that since it is unlikely for the Bank of Japan's policy rate to rise to the market-implied terminal rate level of just over 2%, the yield on Japanese 10-year government bonds is expected to only reach 3%.
