According to CoinMeta, Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music filed a lawsuit against Anthropic last Friday in a federal court in California, accusing the AI company of using copyrighted songs without permission to train its Claude model. The complaint states that Anthropic used “tens of thousands” of copyrighted works from the publishers without authorization. The songs mentioned in the complaint include Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Taylor Swift’s “Paper Rings,” Marvin Gaye’s “No Mountain High Enough,” and the 1980s rock anthem “Eye of the Tiger.” Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell are seeking a jury trial and up to $150,000 in statutory damages for each infringement. Anthropic has denied these accusations and stated that it will resolutely defend itself in court.
