The two officials discussed bilateral financial cooperation as well as collaboration within the framework of the G20. This was Siluanov's first personal attendance at a G20 meeting since the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict. The talks marked a rare high-level contact between the economic teams of the United States and Russia, despite the ongoing tensions between the two countries. Siluanov's participation met with opposition from European officials; German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz stated that he and his colleagues refused to take a traditional group photo with the Russian minister, describing the current relationship with Russia as "by no means normal." Yellen is responsible for U.S. sanctions policy towards Russia. According to NBC, she discussed Trump's peace plan for Ukraine with Siluanov, although no breakthroughs have been made in the negotiations, and there are still significant differences in positions between Russia and Ukraine.
