According to CoinMeta, a fake Claude desktop application is spreading RevStealer, which is a type of Windows malware designed to steal cryptocurrency, passwords, and browser data. According to a report by cybersecurity company Morphisec, RevStealer was previously spread through GitHub repositories and game cheating-themed websites, but what is most notable is a "5 Free Desktops" project that impersonates the AI developer Anthropic, promising free downloads. Researchers pointed out that this malware is designed to leave very few traces and targets browser databases, Cookies, password manager records, VPN and remote access settings, message data, screenshots, and selected documents. RevStealer also targets more than 50 cryptocurrency wallets. The malware checks whether the machine appears to be a real user's device before unlocking its malicious payload.
