US Treasury warns of digital asset investment scams in Southeast Asia
2026-09-04 08:33:27
According to CoinMeta, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FCEN) of the U.S. Treasury Department has issued a warning that digital asset investment scams operated by transnational criminal organizations in Southeast Asia continue to target American citizens. Proficient money launderers use certain techniques to convert the proceeds of these scams from Ethereum to other blockchain networks, and then use mixers, multiple wallets, and cross-chain transfers to obscure the source of the funds. Subsequently, these funds are exchanged for fiat currency through overseas exchanges or money transfer networks and integrated into the traditional financial system. The losses incurred by American victims due to digital asset investment scams have risen from $907 million in 2021 to $7.2 billion in 2025. The U.S. Treasury Department is urging financial institutions to strengthen monitoring and report any suspicious transactions.
