G7 Warning: Quantum Computers May Threaten the Security of Bitcoin Encryption
2026-09-06 17:09:34
According to CoinMeta, G7 recently warned that quantum computers may be able to crack the encryption technology behind Bitcoin in the future. Its cybersecurity working group is calling on governments and enterprises around the world to adopt “post-quantum” encryption technologies before the arrival of quantum computers. Currently, there are about 6.9 million BTC coins stored in addresses with exposed public keys, including an estimated 1.1 million coins believed to belong to Satoshi Nakamoto, worth over $80 billion. Bitcoin’s defense mechanism, a type of quantum-safe address called BIP-360, has been launched on test networks. A more radical proposal is to freeze those vulnerable Bitcoin coins that have never been migrated, including those belonging to Satoshi Nakamoto, but the community has rejected this proposal, considering it “autocratic.”
