German Ministry of Finance proposes a 25% tax on crypto profits
2026-09-09 19:31:24
According to CoinMeta, the German Ministry of Finance has proposed to impose a 25% tax on profits from cryptocurrencies, with the policy expected to be implemented as early as 2028. The ministry estimates that an additional 160 million euros will be collected by 2028, and annual revenue is expected to increase to 350 million euros by 2031. Currently, private investors are exempt from taxes when selling cryptocurrencies after holding them for more than one year. Under the new proposal, profits will be taxed at 25% regardless of how long the investors have held the cryptocurrencies. Crypto profits will be considered as investment income in stocks, replacing the current system where short-term profits are taxed at the individual income tax rate. The proposal still needs to be approved, and it is not yet clear whether existing holdings will retain the tax benefits.
