Diesel prices approach $200, central banks concerned about new inflation risks

According to CoinMeta, as reported by Coinpaper, diesel prices are approaching $200, and central banks are paying attention to new inflation risks. With the worsening global refining shortage, the costs of gasoline and diesel have risen sharply, posing new inflation challenges for the Bank of England, the European Central Bank (ECB), and global markets. A key indicator is the crack spread, which is the difference between crude oil prices and the wholesale prices of refined fuels. Due to wars in the Middle East and Ukraine disrupting refineries and fuel exports, these profit margins have soared despite crude oil still being available. The Bank of England has explicitly warned that the refined fuel market may reflect household energy pressures more accurately than Brent crude oil. Its July monetary policy report noted that, due to shutdowns of refineries in the Middle East, reduced Russian exports, Chinese export restrictions, and limited spare refining capacity, the crack spread remains far higher than pre-conflict levels. The ECB has also noticed this same discrepancy. Its July meeting minutes stated that crude oil prices no longer represent the broader energy market recently, as the crack spreads for gasoline and diesel have reached new highs. As winter approaches, industry executives expect diesel supply to remain tight, with damaged or restricted refining capacity reducing potential fuel production by millions of barrels.
