According to CoinMeta, the amount of cryptocurrency given by Korean families to minors in 2025 increased by 2.7 times, reaching 4.03 billion Korean won (approximately 2.8 million US dollars). Based on data obtained by Democratic Party member Jung Tae-ho from the National Tax Service, there were 103 reported cases of virtual asset gifts last year, an increase from 53 in 2024. Overall, in 2025, the tax service recorded 423 cases of encrypted inheritance and gifts, valued at 45.86 billion Korean won, with the number of cases being 2.4 times that of the previous year and the value increasing by 3.4 times. As the Korean government prepares to provide more tools for the tax service to identify digital assets, the tax reform plan for 2026 will include virtual asset service providers within the scope of financial asset inquiries for inheritance and gift taxes.
