Juan Marchetti: Insufficient regulatory frameworks limit the use of stablecoins in international trade
2026-09-14 22:20:13
According to CoinMeta, WTO Director of Trade Services and Investments Juan Marchetti stated that the main factors restricting the use of stablecoins in international trade are not technical, but rather insufficient regulatory frameworks and governance. He cited a report from the Financial Stability Board from October 2025, which indicated that among the 28 jurisdictions surveyed, only 11 had finalized regulatory frameworks for stablecoins, accounting for 39%. Currently, stablecoins account for only 3% of total international payments, but they have the potential to improve issues such as high costs, slow speeds, limited access, lack of transparency, and foreign exchange restrictions in trade financing.
