According to CoinMeta and reports from Zhitong Finance, during the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), China hosted a side event on the 14th with the theme "Gathering Forces for Small Reactor Innovation, Creating a Nuclear Future Together." The event focused on strengthening international cooperation in small modular reactors globally, promoting technological innovation, standard coordination, capacity building, and related applications, in order to contribute to global climate governance and sustainable development. Shan Zhongde, Director of China's National Nuclear Energy Administration, stated at the conference that China regards nuclear energy as an important option for building a new energy system and achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals. Relying on its complete nuclear industry innovation chain, industrial chain, and talent pool, China has become one of the pioneers in the development and deployment of small reactors. Shan Zhongde mentioned that in the future, China will advocate for technological innovation cooperation, solidify the foundation for the development of the small reactor industry, balance development with safety, strengthen joint training for specialized talents in small reactors, and make full use of multilateral cooperation platforms to carry out extensive international collaboration. During the side event, China launched an initiative for global small reactor innovation cooperation. Huang Wei, Special Representative of the IAEA Director General, expressed that the IAEA welcomes China's initiative and is ready to support China and all member states interested in participating in this cooperation to jointly promote technological innovation, standard coordination, capacity building, and practical applications in the field of small reactors.
