It works like this: Ethena holds spot ETH and BTC, then shorts an equal amount of perpetual futures contracts. When perpetual contract traders hold a net long position, the longs pay a funding rate to the shorts. Ethena collects this funding rate, adds stETH staking rewards and some Treasury bond rewards, and all the returns are paid to users who stake USDe. Therefore, Ethena's top ranking doesn't necessarily indicate inefficiency, but rather that many people have profited from it.

Guys, it's actually quite simple. A group of people staked their ETH on the Ethereum blockchain to earn yield, but they didn't want their funds locked up, so they chose Lido's liquidity staking protocol. Lido provides them with a liquidity staking token called stETH. To further increase their yield, they deposited stETH into Eigenlayer's restaking protocol. But they still didn't want to lock up their funds, so they chose KelpDAO's liquidity restaking protocol. KelpDAO provides them with a liquidity restaking token called rsETH. To further increase their yield, they deposited rsETH into Aave's lending protocol, allowing them to create a leveraged cyclical position, borrowing ETH using rsETH as collateral, then re-staking the borrowed ETH back into rsETH, and finally depositing rsETH as collateral into Eigenlayer. It turned out that rsETH used a cross-chain bridge called LayerZero, which was attacked by North Korean hackers, causing rsETH to be locked up. These revolving positions are now stuck in a stalemate and unprofitable situation due to insufficient collateral, with everyone blaming each other, and DeFi is a very serious industry.
