Anthropic's latest cryptographic research is pushing the discussion on AI and Bitcoin security to a new level. The company claims its cutting-edge model not only found new attack methods against weakened cryptographic algorithms but also improved the efficiency of attacks on a post-quantum signature scheme. While this result doesn't directly threaten the Bitcoin network, it prompts a re-examination of whether future security threats extend beyond quantum computers.
Model Discovery: New Attacks on Weakening Algorithms
According to Anthropic, Claude Mythos Preview discovered a previously unknown attack method in a research environment, targeting a weakened version of the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). AES is one of the most widely used encryption systems globally, but this test did not target a full implementation in a production environment.
The company claims that AI-generated attack methods can increase the speed of cracking related weakening algorithms by approximately 200 to 1000 times. Researchers believe this indicates that cutting-edge models are beginning to possess the ability to produce original cryptographic research, rather than simply reiterating existing knowledge.
It also touches on post-quantum signature schemes
Anthropic also stated that Mythos has improved upon the attack method for HAWK. HAWK is a post-quantum cryptographic signature scheme, belonging to one of the current research directions in cryptography to address the risks of quantum computing.
This is why the Bitcoin community is paying attention to this issue. Bitcoin currently relies primarily on ECDSA signatures to verify transaction authorization. For a long time, the cryptography community has believed that ECDSA could theoretically be broken once quantum computing power is sufficient. Therefore, developers have begun discussing migrating to post-quantum signature schemes in recent years, with lattice-based cryptographic schemes being one of the main candidate directions.
Bitcoin currently poses no direct risk.
However, this research does not imply any real risk to Bitcoin or internet encryption systems at this stage. The report notes that these attacks target deliberately weakened cryptographic systems for research purposes, not mature versions in actual deployment. Anthropic also states that modern AES remains secure.
What's truly noteworthy is the shift in the direction of the discussion. In the past, the market was more concerned about when quantum computing would threaten Bitcoin's signature system. Now, with the improvement of AI's capabilities in mathematics and cryptography, developers may need to take AI-driven cryptography into account when assessing post-quantum security in the future.
