Meta is focusing its next phase of product development on personal AI agents. CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated in an earnings call that within the next five years, billions of people could have AI agents that understand their personal goals and continuously handle tasks on their behalf.

Messaging platform entry point

He mentioned that these agents could be used in scenarios such as financial management, health matters, interpersonal communication, and family arrangements. According to him, the importance of WhatsApp and other messaging products under Meta will further increase as users begin to interact with multiple AI agents simultaneously.

Meta also stated that WhatsApp is already the primary entry point for users to engage with Meta AI. Unlike chatbots that only answer questions, Meta is betting on agent-like AI that can understand goals and continuously perform tasks.

Share price under pressure after earnings report

However, investors remain cautious about Meta's continued large-scale investment in new technologies. Following the earnings release, Meta's stock price fell by nearly 10% at one point. Market concerns extend beyond the vision itself, including the pressure these investments will put on cash flow and profits.

Reality Labs reported a loss of approximately $4.6 billion this quarter. This division, responsible for AR glasses, VR headsets, and related software, has been operating at a high loss rate since 2021, with accumulated losses approaching $88 billion.

AI infrastructure continues to expand.

Meta's free cash flow fell to $784 million this quarter, down from $8.55 billion in the same period last year, a year-on-year decrease of approximately 91%. The company stated that the construction of AI infrastructure was one of the significant factors dragging down cash flow.

This week, Meta and BlackRock announced a partnership to build a $14 billion data center in El Paso, Texas. This demonstrates that Meta is laying the computing power foundation for larger-scale AI services.

Progress has been made on the enterprise side.

In practical implementation, Meta expanded its AI agent for enterprises to WhatsApp and Messenger users worldwide this quarter. The company says that more than 1 million enterprises are now using this type of tool.

Zuckerberg stated that personal AI agents will form the basis of Meta's new products and revenue in the coming months and years. Adoption among ordinary consumers is still in its early stages compared to the enterprise market, but Meta clearly hopes to first establish usage habits on its messaging platform.
