Coinbase's latest quarterly results missed market expectations, with weak trading activity further dragging down market sentiment. Total revenue was $1.2 billion, below analysts' forecasts of $1.3 billion and also lower than the $1.5 billion reported in the same period last year.

Transaction revenue decreased by 21% year-on-year.

The core concern for investors remains the slowdown in trading revenue. As the company's primary source of income, this segment declined by 21% year-over-year in the second quarter, falling to less than $600 million. The overall decrease in activity in the cryptocurrency spot market also directly impacted the platform's trading volume and transaction fees.

Coinbase CFO Alesia Haas stated that the crypto market environment weakened significantly in the second quarter, with overall crypto spot trading volume declining by more than 20% quarter-over-quarter. Against this backdrop, it's not surprising that Coinbase's core trading business faced pressure, but its performance still fell short of Wall Street expectations.

USDC remains an important source of revenue.

While trading revenue declined, stablecoins and subscription services continued to provide support. USDC-related revenue remained one of Coinbase's most important single sources of income. The company's stablecoin revenue reached $292 million in the second quarter.

  • The pledged proceeds amounted to $83 million.
  • Interest and financial fee income was US$66 million.
  • Other subscription and service revenue was approximately $114 million.

However, subscription and services revenue was $555 million this quarter, also showing weakness. This segment has declined for three consecutive quarters, indicating that Coinbase's progress in diversifying its revenue streams continues to face pressure.

The return on investment for the base remains to be seen.

Coinbase has been continuously investing in its Base network in recent years, hoping to expand new sources of growth through its on-chain ecosystem. However, judging from its current financial performance, investors are still observing whether this investment can truly translate into more tangible revenue growth.

Currently, subscription and service revenue accounts for nearly half of the company's net income, indicating that Coinbase is trying to reduce its reliance on transaction fees. However, given declining trading activity and increased competition, the market remains cautious about its short-term growth prospects.
