MoonPay revealed that the company obtained a license for an electronic currency institution ( EMI ) on September 8th from the Dutch Central Bank ( De Nederlandsche Bank , DNB ). This approval allows them to launch regulated euro-denominated stablecoins in the European market, extending their business from cryptocurrency trading to the payment sector as well.

Licensure covers stablecoins and payment services

The company stated that this license not only allows it to issue euro-stablecoins but also opens up opportunities for providing payment accounts, payment services, and card-related products to individuals and businesses. Since the EMI license is valid within the European Economic Area, MoonPay can rely on a Dutch entity to offer related services to a broader European market.

This means that MoonPay will have a more comprehensive set of in-house compliance capabilities in connecting traditional currencies with digital assets, without having to rely entirely on external banking partners.

Already holds MiCA with CASP authorization.

Prior to this approval, MoonPay had already obtained the authorization as a MiCA crypto asset service provider ( CASP ) from the Dutch Financial Markets Authority. The newly acquired EMI license complements its compliance qualifications in the area of electronic money and payment services.

According to the company, this has added regulated payment and cryptocurrency capabilities beyond their existing encryption business framework, and it also provides a foundation for the subsequent implementation of stablecoin products.

Plans to continue advancing euro-stablecoin products

MoonPay indicates that in the coming months, efforts will continue to be focused on developing strategies around payment accounts, stablecoin issuance, and card products. The company stated that it has now become the third company in the Netherlands to hold both a MiCA CASP license and a EMI license within the same entity.

MoonPay also indicates that among such institutions, the company is the first to combine two types of licenses with the capability to issue open-source stablecoins. For them, the new licenses have filled in the critical payment link required for the expansion of stablecoins, and the next step will be to directly connect the euro stablecoin with European payment products.
