PayPal announced that its second-quarter revenue and profit exceeded market expectations, and raised its adjusted earnings guidance for 2026. Following the earnings release, PayPal's stock price rose more than 4% on Tuesday, with the market also focusing on its payment business growth, profit margin changes, and the latest developments surrounding potential acquisition rumors.

Second-quarter revenue exceeded expectations.

In the second quarter ending June 30, PayPal reported revenue of $8.68 billion, exceeding analysts' expectations of $8.47 billion and representing a 5% year-over-year increase.

The company processed 6.8 billion payment transactions in the quarter, up 8% year-over-year. Active accounts reached 439 million, and the average number of transactions per active account over the past 12 months rose to 60, up 3% year-over-year.

In terms of cash flow, PayPal reported $2 billion in operating cash flow and $1.8 billion in free cash flow for the quarter. At the end of the quarter, the company held $15.3 billion in cash and investments, and had $13.4 billion in debt.

Raise 2026 earnings guidance

The company disclosed that following stronger-than-expected performance in the second quarter, it has raised its full-year 2026 non-GAAP earnings per share (EPS) guidance. The latest guidance is approximately $5.38, higher than the previous level and also higher than the previous year's EPS of $5.31.

PayPal also raised its full-year guidance for non-GAAP transaction profits, but maintained its forecast that GAAP earnings per share would see a mid-single-digit decline.

However, profit margins remained under pressure. Second-quarter GAAP operating profit fell 5% year-over-year to $1.4 billion, while non-GAAP operating profit fell 8% to $1.5 billion. GAAP operating margin decreased to 16.4%, and non-GAAP operating margin decreased to 17.4%. GAAP earnings per share fell to $1.25 from $1.29 in the same period last year, and adjusted earnings per share also declined slightly year-over-year.

Business restructuring is still underway

Management stated that the company is still advancing its business transformation, focusing on three key areas: checkout solutions and the PayPal main brand, consumer financial services and Venmo, and payment services and crypto business.

PayPal stated that its brand checkout business has further stabilized, while Venmo and Braintree continue to maintain growth momentum. Management anticipates that investments in technology and consumer services will deliver a more significant business boost in 2027.

The company also plans to expand its presence in the financial services sector beyond Venmo's core checkout business. Management believes this direction could become a significant source of future trading profit growth.

Acquisition rumors remain a focus of attention

Rumors surrounding a potential acquisition of PayPal remain a focus of market attention. Reports indicate that the proposed offer values the company at over $53 billion, but PayPal's board reportedly considers the offer too low and also faces financing and regulatory hurdles.

During the earnings call, management did not directly respond to the acquisition rumors, only stating that the company does not comment on market speculation or potential merger and acquisition discussions as is its custom.

Additional information:The “Payment Services and Encryption Business” mentioned in the article is part of PayPal’s current business segmentation, but the original article did not disclose the segment’s separate revenue or profit data for this quarter.
