According to CoinMeta, on July 29th, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on two Iranian maritime insurance companies, accusing them of supporting systems related to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard of Iran and using vessels in the Strait of Hormuz to generate revenue. The Treasury Department listed Hormuzsafe Marine Services Authority and Persian Gulf Marine Insurance Company on the Specially Designated Nationals list, imposing sanctions under Executive Order 13902. The Treasury Department stated that these two companies were part of a "extortion scheme supported by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard" and required commercial vessels to purchase approved maritime insurance before passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Although the Treasury Department's announcement confirmed the sanctions, it did not provide any specific on-chain evidence regarding Bitcoin payments.
