According to CoinMeta, the hackers of Revolut demanded payment of 3 million US dollars in Monero (Monero) and threatened to sell the stolen customer data if the bank refused to pay. The hacker group identified itself as “iamnotavillain” and made this demand on Wednesday, accompanied by a countdown clock. The report states that the hackers requested Revolut to send 6,000 Monero coins, a cryptocurrency designed to obscure transaction details. This data breach affected at least 680 Revolut customer accounts. The hackers claimed to have selected their targets through blockchain analysis, looking for Revolut accounts that held large amounts of crypto assets. The group sent a 60-second screenshot recording to the media, which seemingly displayed some of the data they obtained, including passports, driver's licenses, photos used for customer authentication, and transaction history. The breach occurred after the attackers pretended to be government officials and sent information requests that passed Revolut checks. Revolut surrendered the customer records after discovering that the requests were fraudulent. The company stated that its systems and customer funds were not affected.
