This research was conducted by researchers from the security teams at ETH Zurich and AI, indicating that large language models can identify personal information of anonymous users through reading and reasoning. The study points out that it is possible to expose any anonymous Reddit account in less than a minute, for a cost of only $2. The researchers argue that the “actual anonymity” on the internet no longer exists and call for a re-evaluation of the threat model to online privacy. The study also demonstrates how AI can achieve this goal through four steps: extraction, search, reasoning, and calibration.
