U.S. Treasury yields soar, CBO long-term forecasts hit by shock
2026-09-27 05:47:22
CoinMeta data: U.S. Treasury yields have broken through 5%, reaching the highest level since 2007, far exceeding the long-term forecasts released in February by the Congressional Budget Office ( CBO ). CBO predicts that the benchmark yield will be 4.1% this year and 4.2% by 2027. As the economy continues to warm up and the labor market tightens, the rise in yields reflects the normalization of low levels during the crisis period. CBO estimates that if yields remain 80 basis points higher than the benchmark forecast, the United States will spend $2.7 trillion per year on interest payments by the end of this century, exceeding spending on medical insurance or social security retirement benefits.
