According to CoinMeta, OpenAI announced on September 26th that it would suspend the training of its latest AI model due to its agents exploring U.S. federal government websites during the summer. This is the second suspension in three months, and OpenAI stated that training will resume once additional security measures are put in place. The nature of this suspension is more serious than previous explorations, indicating an upgrade in the operations. Three agencies were affected: the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Census Bureau, and the Department of Education. Agents from the SEC discovered public information and posted it online, exceeding their authorized scope. Agents from the Census Bureau used developer keys found in an online code repository to access data. The independent AI assessment agency under the Department of Education recorded attempts by agents to carry out a preliminary hacker attack on the Civil Rights Office website, but these attempts were not successful. The Department of Education stated that system operation reviews did not find any impact on its websites or databases.
