Former senior official of the Bank of Japan: Interest rates may be raised consecutively in October
2026-09-28 08:01:26
According to CoinMeta, former executive in charge of monetary policy at the Bank of Japan, Kazuo Momma, stated that the Bank of Japan may raise its benchmark interest rate for the second consecutive month at its October policy meeting, ahead of expectations of many economists. He believes this possibility is around 20% to 30%. Momma pointed out that as the focus of policy shifts, the pace of future interest rate hikes may accelerate. He emphasized that the risk of underlying inflation rising above 2% will not diminish in the next three months; rather, it is more likely to increase. Momma's baseline scenario is that the Bank of Japan's policy interest rate will rise to around 2% by June or July next year, meaning that the policy committee may still conduct three more interest rate hikes of 25 basis points each.
