The base is home to U.S. military forces and has been used for military operations targeting Iran. British police stated on Monday that the five men arrested are all British citizens in their early 20s, residing in London. They were apprehended hundreds of yards near Fairford Royal Air Force Base in western England. The police have not yet determined the motive for the attack, but security officials suspect that U.S. B-1 bombers based at the base may have been the target. Security officials also noted on Monday that it is too early to determine whether these men were commanded by Tehran. Earlier this year, Iran warned the UK that if it allowed the U.S. to use British bases to attack Iran, the UK would face consequences. U.S. bombers have previously used Fairford Base to carry out missions related to conflicts in the Middle East.
