According to CoinMeta, OpenAI has paused the training of its latest AI model because its agents used access keys found online to extract data from the U.S. Census Bureau website. This is the second time the company has stopped training since its agents intruded into Hugging Face. The agents of OpenAI are AI programs that are capable of browsing the internet independently and writing code; the training phase is a process in which the model learns through repeated practice. OpenAI indicates that these agents discovered developer keys while searching for data, which allow the software to interact with the website's data services, and these keys are publicly visible in public code repositories such as GitHub. The reporting framework of OpenAI lists the unauthorized use of exposed credentials as improper behavior, which the industry refers to as "misalignment." In addition to the Department of Commerce, other agencies have also been affected by these "malicious" agents.
