According to CoinMeta, the Seoul police in South Korea have arrested seven suspects for conducting hacker attacks using generative AI. The targets included approximately 90 organizations, and a total of 8.2 million records were stolen. This is the first time in South Korea that suspects involved in large-scale AI-assisted hacker activities have been arrested. The police stated that the victims included hospitals, universities, private tutoring schools, golf courses, and subsidiaries of large corporations; one funeral service provider lost 1.22 million records. One of the suspects, a 32-year-old mastermind, claimed to have self-taught himself hacking techniques through YouTube and online blogs. The police mentioned that he had worked on simulated attacks at a security company between 2019 and 2022. This hacker managed to infiltrate 60 companies within 44 days. In the past, attacks of this scale would typically require a team of hackers, but now AI enables a single person to accomplish such tasks in a short period of time.
