OpenAI Plans to Purchase Google AI Chips to Reduce Dependence on NVIDIA
2026-10-28 08:16:47
According to CoinMeta, as reported by The Information, OpenAI is said to be planning to purchase Google's artificial intelligence chips in order to accelerate its move away from dependence on NVIDIA. If OpenAI decides to purchase Google's tensor processing units (TPUs), it would be a major victory for Google's chip business. It is not yet clear what the financial terms and other details of OpenAI's plan to purchase Google chips are. OpenAI is currently hiring an engineer to be responsible for "leading the optimization" of the company's most advanced models so that they can run on TPU. Last year, The Information reported that OpenAI had begun using Google's TPU, thereby reducing its reliance on NVIDIA chips. This news prompted NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang to take quick action, and subsequently NVIDIA and OpenAI began collaborating on a new agreement. A spokesperson for OpenAI stated that the company "currently has no plans to use TPU exclusively."
