According to CoinMeta, the United States Department of Justice's "Fraud Center Strike Force" in collaboration with FBI and the Secret Service announced several successes in combating cross-border online fraud, officially prosecuting six international fraudsters hiding in Madagascar, Africa. The indictment alleges that their leader, Chui Kok Wa, and others moved their operations from Cambodia to Madagascar to set up fraud camps. They used dating apps and pretended to be women to lure approximately 800 American victims into connecting with fake NFT platforms, after which they stole funds. The stolen money was laundered and transferred to associated accounts. In addition, the Department of Justice revealed that over the past year, it has seized more than $1 billion in crypto assets related to these crimes, shut down 700 fake investment websites and thousands of Starlink terminals, and removed 17.3 million social media accounts involved in fraud. Multiple organizations, including OpenAI, Tether, and Chainalysis, also assisted in these efforts.
