OpenAI plans to display advertisements for the free version of ChatGPT and the subscription tier of Go in India, targeting users who are more price-sensitive or those who do not pay for services. India has already become an important growth market for ChatGPT, and this move indicates that OpenAI is continuing to pursue product monetization.

The scale of Indian users has become a key foundation.

OpenAI stated in February of this year that ChatGPT has over 100 million weekly active users in India. A considerable portion of these users are concentrated in the free version and the lower-priced Go tier, which also provides a direct traffic base for the advertising model.

Over the past year, OpenAI has continued to increase its investment in India. In August 2025, the company launched a ChatGPT Go plan priced below $5 and conducted a limited-time promotion, offering free use for one year to this tier in order to expand user coverage.

First expand the user base, then promote monetization.

In addition to its pricing strategy, OpenAI also continues to invest in local brand promotion. Its products have received significant exposure during sporting events such as the Indian Women's Cricket Super League WPL and the Indian Cricket Super League IPL, leveraging high-traffic scenarios to increase awareness.

The company has recently appointed Uber as the person in charge of its Indian business, responsible for local expansion efforts. Considering both the introduction of advertising campaigns and management adjustments, the Indian market has been given a more significant role; it is not only a source of user growth but also tasked with generating revenue.

IPO Expected continued expansion of the revenue structure in the future

As the potential initial public offering (IPO) approaches, OpenAI is accelerating efforts to diversify its revenue streams. Previously, the market has been paying attention to its subscription services, corporate solutions, and API business, with advertising seen as a new supplementary direction, particularly suitable for reaching a large base of low-cost users.

According to The Wall Street Journal, in the second quarter of 2026, OpenAI reported revenue of $6.7 billion, up from $5.7 billion in the previous quarter. As the user base continues to grow, the company is attempting to convert its traffic advantage into more stable commercial returns.
