Coinbase has been approved by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to register Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization, completing the final regulatory piece required for it to conduct integrated derivatives business in the United States. The company stated that this enables it to list, broker, and clear regulated derivatives within the same corporate structure, with its clearing institution based on USDC native collateral and 24/7 settlement.

The last regulatory piece required for Coinbase to carry out a complete integrated derivatives business in the United States has been put in place. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) of the United States has approved Coinbase Clearing LLC as a registered derivatives clearing organization (derivatives clearing organization).

This approval means that Coinbase can now combine existing futures brokers and designated contract markets with its own clearing house, allowing it to list, broker, and clear regulated derivatives within the same corporate framework. Coinbase indicates that this new structure also makes Coinbase Clearing the first U.S. clearing house to be built around USDC's native collateral and 24/7 settlement.

For Coinbase, this significance is not just about obtaining another license. It brings the company one step closer to operating a vertically integrated derivatives infrastructure that is typically associated with large futures exchanges.

Coinbase can now control the entire transaction lifecycle.

Coinbase has been operating Coinbase Derivatives LLC — the designated contract market supervised by CFTC — as well as Coinbase Financial Markets, which is its futures brokerage firm.

The new DCO registration has completed the third layer.

This enables Coinbase to directly control three independent functions: creating and listing contracts, connecting customers to these products, and clearing the transactions that arise therefrom.

According to the official registration database of regulatory authorities, the registration of CFTC allows Coinbase Clearing to clear fully mortgaged futures, futures options, and swaps.

This move is built upon the previous expansion of Coinbase's derivative business, which includes a regulatory pathway that allows eligible American customers to access certain crypto perpetual futures.

USDC Enters the Liquidation Layer

One of the more notable aspects of this announcement is that Coinbase has decided to establish a clearinghouse around USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement.

Traditional futures markets typically operate around established settlement cycles and banking infrastructure. Coinbase positions its system on top of a structure that allows the crypto market to operate around the clock.

As exchanges compete to bring sustainable futures, crypto options, and other derivatives to the United States, this point may become increasingly important.

Coinbase received regulatory exemptions earlier this year, which expanded the access to overseas derivative products; this decision also sparked resistance from traditional exchange operators. CME subsequently turned to file a legal challenge against CFTC, claiming that certain crypto perpetual products were misclassified.
