OpenAI doesn't just challenge productivity software through the new Pages, Slides, and Space functions of ChatGPT; this AI laboratory is now also targeting applications that can perform better after integration with ChatGPT.
During the company's presentation on Tuesday at Dev Day, this AI company stated that developers can now use plugins to extend and build their own custom application experiences within ChatGPT.
OpenAI currently supports plugins, which can connect ChatGPT to daily tools such as Slack, SharePoint, Airtable, and Google Drive. However, new plugin extensions will provide a dedicated space for applications in the ChatGPT sidebar.
In addition, developers can also build interactive panels that allow users to directly use their own tools when chatting with ChatGPT. The company stated that this experience can also include file viewers to support any file formats used by the developers' products.
OpenAI also indicates that it is making it easier for developers to build plugins and simplifying the discovery process for end-users. Developers will have access to a new Plugin Creator tool for building plugins, and they will be able to submit them to the plugin directory through a redesigned submission process that provides clearer feedback.
At the same time, the company stated that it has improved the sorting and recommendation of plugins in the directory, as well as the timing of their display during conversations. When users choose a particular plugin for collaboration, they can also approve its access permissions on an individual basis.
In addition, ChatGPT Sites — lightweight websites built using ChatGPT — can also host these plugins. For example, this would allow someone to share their applications with colleagues, who can then run those applications using their own connected data and permissions.
OpenAI also indicates that it is increasing support for the proposed MCP Events specification, which will allow plugins to initiate automation based on events within connected applications. The company is also making the addition and management of automation easier.
