Investment bank TD Cowen states that Bitcoin is not just an asset; in the future, it will increasingly be used as a financial infrastructure to support institutional products.
In a report released on Tuesday, TD Cowen stated that after participating in the BitcoinTreasuries Conference held in New York this week, the bank noticed that institutions are not only interested in continuing to increase their holdings of this leading cryptocurrency.
This statement comes at a time when major global banks are conducting more in-depth research into the technologies that underpin Bitcoin. Numerous institutions are providing encrypted products to their customers and using them internally to simplify their own services.
The report states: "It seems that Bitcoin is increasingly moving beyond its role as an investable asset to assume a broader function, becoming a financial infrastructure capable of supporting new capital market activities."
The report also states: "In our view, the most interesting discussions are not necessarily about Bitcoin itself, but rather about the ecosystem that is being built around it."
The report adds that Bitcoin could be used in the next phase to “support capital market infrastructure.”
Nasdaq-listed Bitcoin treasury company Strategy has long argued that this leading cryptocurrency will provide support for other products in the financial industry. The company is the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin and currently offers preferred stocks that pay dividends to investors.
TD Cowen indicates that as 'larger pools of capital enter this ecosystem', Bitcoin custody is becoming more institutionalized.
In recent years, banks in the United States and Europe have begun to discuss or offer Bitcoin custody services.
BNY Mellon became the first major U.S. bank to offer digital asset custody services in 2022. This month, Deutsche Bank, a German multinational bank, announced that it will launch Bitcoin custody services for European corporate and institutional clients later in 2026.
TD Cowen added, "We believe that these developments indicate that Bitcoin is continuing to evolve from a standalone asset into a broader financial ecosystem that can support increasingly complex institutional participation."
TD Cowen is a department under the multinational company TD Securities.
