News from the IT Home on October 5th: The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association in the United States released the JESD264 Silicon Photonics ( SiPh ) Device Certification and Reliability Requirements on the 1st of this month, local time. This is the first industry-wide standard for unified certification and reliability practices for silicon photonics devices.
Previously, there was a lack of standardized, industry-wide reliability ownership and validation frameworks in the field of silicon photonics, leading to uncertainties throughout the supply chain. JESD264 helps to reduce deployment risks by establishing common benchmarks for testing and manufacturing control, and supports the broader application of silicon photonics technology in high-speed data centers, telecommunications, and artificial intelligence networks.
This standard supports the integration of complex photonic chipsets that include lasers, modulators, photodiodes, and passive optical structures; it also clarifies the responsibilities for reliability among foundries, outsourced packaging and testing services, and system developers, thereby contributing to improved consistency throughout the silicon photonics ecosystem.
JESD264 is a comprehensive reliability protocol applicable to silicon photonics chips and integrated chipsets, providing component-level qualification guidelines for various types of devices. It includes clear assembly processes and laser integration requirements, as well as controls and traceability requirements for the production process.

JEDEC The chairman of the board, Mian Quddus, stated: "As artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and high-speed communications continue to drive the demand for higher bandwidth and performance, industry standards are becoming increasingly important. JESD264 This helps to establish the reliability foundation necessary for the broader application of silicon photonics technology, accelerates innovation, and strengthens coordination across the entire industry."
