Senior game mod creators are expressing dissatisfaction with the increasing popularity of "atmosphere coding" mods created for AI, stating that such works, which forcibly combine different games, are poorly made and lack creativity. IGN reports that such mods have not yet appeared for Nexus Mods yet, and the reason may be related to copyright and licensing issues.

News from the IT community on October 5th: Senior game mod creators (mod) are deeply dissatisfied with the recent trend in the internet mod community, which involves mods known as "atmosphere coding (vibe – coded)" generated by AI.

According to IGN, opposition voices are continuing to grow: many mod creators (some of whom openly admit using generative AI to assist in mod writing) are discussing a type of mixed mods that forcibly combine multiple unrelated games together.

"I myself am making game mods, and I have no issue with using AI for my development. However, I detest this absurd trend. It's purely shoddy work that doesn't possess any creativity at all," wrote mod creator kran27_. He also added, "Currently, everything that tries to gain traffic is just such gimmicky stuff designed to deceive people."

Another creator named discountmodder said, "If the modding community remains like this in the future, this might be my last project. I don't want to stay in a factory that produces low-quality content like AI."

What really angered them was the emergence of a large number of cross-genre mod combinations: content from "World of Warcraft" was brought into "Call of Duty: Warzone," "Escape from Tarkov" was ported into "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim," and there was also a version of an insomnia group's "Spider-Man" mod that allowed players to control Spider-Man and navigate through the city of Gotham in "Batman: Arkham City."

IT noticed that within just one week, this trend has intensified. The driving force behind it is Claude Opus. The cost of using this model's elements (token) has decreased, and its code generation capabilities have improved. Users only need to submit their games to the model for processing, and after decompilation, they can forcibly add completely unrelated content to the games, significantly lowering the barrier to entry.

The performance of these modules can at best be described as inconsistent. Blogger Brendan Joyette ( Brendan Jowett ) posted a comparison video that tested the Opus 5.5 and the OpenAI Astra 6 models. It was evident that both models had difficulty handling even basic logic: the enemies ignored the player's character, and the space fighters flew diagonally while firing straight forward at the same time.

However, so far, there have been no such hybrid mods on mainstream mod platforms like Nexus Mods. IGN believes that the reason behind this is most likely related to copyright issues, rather than a lack of interest from people. Nexus platform introduced clear rules regarding the generation of content in AI as early as 2023: "To avoid disputes arising from your mods, we recommend not using such AI tools; unless you have obtained explicit permission to use all the material resources."

Almost all such mods that are currently circulating on the social platform X (formerly Twitter) use unauthorized decompiled code and game materials, which is precisely what Nexus has policies in place to prohibit.

As IGN pointed out, one of the main concerns for mod developers is whether the existing rules will still apply if a certain platform decides to start hosting such mods in the future. At present, this trend is still limited to platform X, which is using it to attract traffic, but it has the potential to completely redefine what "mod development" means.

Once the masterpiece " GTA6 " is launched on the PC platform in the future, there will undoubtedly be a plethora of mods appearing all over the internet; however, prior to that, the game company Rockstar has already introduced new restrictions for the mod community.
