News from the IT community on October 5th: Capcom has announced that it will make its latest data processing and serialization foundation library, “RE : Dox”, available as open-source software (“OSS”). This project is one of the foundational technologies for Capcom's next-generation game engine initiative “REX” (which includes RE, neXt, and ENGINE), and developers are free to use it.
Capcom announced the REX engine project as early as October 2023, with the goal of improving issues that gradually emerged after the long-term use of the RE ENGINE engine. This was to be achieved through phased updates, pushing the engine towards the next generation. For example, on October 2nd, during the technical demonstration event “CAPCOM Open Conference RE:2026” held in Tokyo, Capcom introduced the future plans for the REX project and also made public one of the foundational technologies that constitute the REX engine, namely “RE: Dox”.

According to the introduction, RE : Dox itself is a structured data engine designed for NET. It is mainly used to convert different types of data into a unified format and rules, thereby improving the efficiency of data processing, editing, and reading.
Capcom provides practical usage examples in README of GitHub. Taking player data as an example, character data originally recorded in JSON format can be processed using the classes provided by RE : Dox. For instance, one can create a level 42 character named Leon who is equipped with a pistol and green herbs; then read the data and change the character's name to “Cray” (Clair), and even add items such as a “pocket knife”.
According to the benchmark tests officially released, when parallel processing the deserialization of JSON (serialization of deserialization), RE : Dox can theoretically achieve a processing speed approximately 2.84 times that of the NET standard. However, the actual performance during operation may still be affected by factors such as data structure, operating environment, and CPU.
Currently, RE : Dox has been open-sourced under the Apache-2.0 license. Developers can freely use and modify it as long as they comply with the license requirements, and they are even allowed to apply it to commercial projects.
