Uber is acquiring a catering company named ezCater, continuing to expand the types of services that its Uber Eats business can provide. This transaction is a cash-only deal, valued at $2.3 billion.
ezCater is known as "the leading group meal and business meal platform in the United States" and is a market platform for enterprises that require large quantities of meals, which can be understood as the dining version of Expedia. The company was established in 2007. Uber indicates that in the past 12 months, the total booking amount of ezCater exceeded 2.5 billion US dollars.
For a company that operated on its own funds for 7 years before raising $4 million in its first financing in 2014, this is a huge exit deal.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi described this acquisition as a way to help restaurants find new, larger customer bases. In his statement, he said: "Group dining is a big business and can also become a significant source of revenue for restaurants. With the coverage of Uber, we can bring this experience to millions more customers and help restaurants win more high-value orders."
