Araceli Biosciences and Ginkgo Bioworks ( NYSE : DNA ) announced today that they will integrate the Araceli Endeavor ® high-content imaging equipment into their autonomous laboratory “Nebula” located in Boston. Araceli states that Endeavor is the fastest high-content imaging system in the world, capable of complementing the existing technologies of Nebula with cell imaging and real-time analysis capabilities, and providing researchers with large, organized datasets necessary for training and validating AI models in drug discovery.
Nebula is constructed based on Ginkgo's “Reconfigurable Automation Carts” ( RACs ). Ginkgo states that each RAC is a modular unit, integrating robotic arms, automated sample transfer, and unified control software; therefore, the equipment can be added or rearranged as the work process changes. Ginkgo indicates that dozens of scientists use over 100 RAC on Nebula to conduct real research, submit experimental plans, and receive data the following day. Nebula can autonomously process large amounts of work in parallel, operating around the clock, and requires about one-third of the space needed for traditional laboratories to accomplish the same task.
The Endeavor system is capable of scanning a 1536-well plate in less than four minutes, and has been integrated into the Nebula system based on RAC. It can operate continuously alongside ongoing experiments. With the help of the ClaireRT ™ software from Araceli, Endeavor analyzes each well during the image collection process. If a well does not meet the preset standards, the system can notify the operator or Nebula, or pause imaging to allow for issues to be corrected before the experiment continues.
Araceli Biosciences President and CEO, Matt Beaudet, stated: "Next-generation drug discovery AI requires completely different types of biological data. The laboratories themselves are undergoing changes. They now generate cell data, interpret what they see, and respond in real time. Ginkgo is achieving this through Nebula, while Araceli integrates high-resolution imaging and real-time analysis on a large scale into this process."
Ginkgo Bioworks, co-founder and CEO, and Jason Kelly stated: "Whenever you add a first-class piece of equipment to an independent laboratory, its value increases. With one's own independent laboratory, each scientist can utilize Endeavor's industry-leading high-content imaging capabilities and easily connect it with all other equipment. This is precisely what independent laboratories offer: the ability to integrate the best tools in biology into a unified software system, allowing experiments to run around the clock."
Araceli Biosciences indicates that the company develops the world's fastest high-content imaging equipment, as well as AI analysis software for automated, AI driven laboratories. Its integrated solutions can provide real-time cellular insights, enabling automated workflows to check quality and make decisions at every stage of the experiment, thereby helping biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to expand research results more quickly and with greater certainty.
