Seattle, October 9th / PRNewswire / -- The next-generation space-based radar payload developer, Kapta Space, announced today the completion of a $24 million Series A financing round. The round was led by Washington Harbour Partners, with Bison Ventures also co-leading the investment. MetaVC and a group of new and existing investors participated, including MYDA Capital, Entrada Ventures, Aurelia Foundry, and Fitz Gate Ventures. Following this financing round, Kapta's cumulative funding has reached $30 million.
This funding will help Kapta expand the production scale of its technology in order to support several confidential mission-oriented contracts (MTI) that the company obtained earlier this year.
The original intention of establishing Kapta was to address a core challenge in space radar intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR): to provide continuous coverage in order to detect and continuously track mobile threats in the air, at sea, and on land. Traditional radar payloads have always been costly and complex, making it difficult to deploy them in large satellite constellations required for such tasks.
The modular Metamaterial Electronically Scanned Array ( MESA ™) architecture of Kapta has redefined the way electronic steerable radar payloads are constructed. This software-defined architecture is designed to provide advanced radar performance at a significantly lower cost, power consumption, and manufacturing complexity compared to traditional AESA methods, thus paving the way for scaled sensing.
The challenges faced by continuous space-based situational awareness are not only about detecting and tracking targets, but also about maintaining control over them as they move. The electronically steerable radar architecture of Kapta combines a wide field of view, rapid beam steering, and an expandable aperture, enabling spacecraft to search for, track, repeatedly observe, and continuously maintain control over dynamic target situations on a mission-scale.
Kapta Space, the founder and CEO, stated: "The mission requires continuous perception, which necessitates us to rethink how radar should function on a constellation scale. Traditional architectures are too costly and were never designed for the scale required by today's missions. This investment allows us to advance technology, expand manufacturing capabilities, and work with strategic partners to push this capability through flight verification and into contracted orbital missions, opening the door to a new class of continuous tracking and advanced ISR missions from orbit."
The founder and CEO of Washington Harbour Partners stated: "For decades, traditional AESA systems have been difficult to deploy on the scale required for tasks such as MTI due to high costs and complexity. The MESA architecture of Kapta has changed this situation with its modular, highly manufacturable electronic steerable radar solution. We believe that the combination of performance, cost, and scalability will make Kapta a foundational supplier for the next generation of space architectures in the United States and its allies, and we are delighted to lead this round of Series A financing."
Bison Ventures Co-founder Ben Hemani stated: " Kapta is rethinking a key system from first principles. By making air-based radar more scalable, cost-effective, and easier to manufacture, this team is enabling continuous perception on a scale that traditional architectures simply cannot support. Such enabling technologies have tremendous potential for real-world impact, and that's exactly what we're looking for at Bison."
After completing the Series A financing, Kapta will focus on advancing the flight certification of its payloads, expanding manufacturing capabilities, and preparing for the first orbital demonstration. These complex demonstration tasks will bring the company one step closer to supplying radar payloads on the scale required for future MTI missions.
About Kapta Space
Headquartered in Seattle, Kapta Space develops advanced electronic steering radar payloads for next-generation airborne intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and tracking missions. Its technology is designed to support moving target indication ( MTI ), large-scale dynamic target tracking, as well as high-resolution SAR imaging from low Earth orbit. With fast electronic beam steering, wide field of view, and continuous repeated observation capabilities, Kapta's payloads are intended to support high-demand national security missions that require responsive detection, tracking, and feature recognition of difficult-to-catch or time-critical targets. By significantly reducing the cost and complexity of traditional airborne radar architectures, Kapta is creating a new class of scalable, mission-oriented sensing capabilities for defense and intelligence customers.
