TypeSafe AI is the developer of the new AI model Jev. Jev became popular rapidly just a few weeks after its launch, and TypeSafe AI has already raised 870 million US dollars in financing, with a post-investment valuation of 7.5 billion US dollars.
This round of financing was led by Andreessen Horowitz, with Sequoia and existing investor DCVC also participating.
Considering that Jev became popular almost immediately after its release on September 15th, this large-scale financing is not surprising. The startup claims that one-third of the Fortune 500 companies are already using this model, indicating a rather rapid adoption rate by businesses.
Jev is based on the Transformer architecture, but it is not a large-scale language model (LLM). Instead of outputting text, it generates probabilities, or what the company calls "calibrated decisions." TypeSafe indicates that what excites users and large enterprises so much about Jev is its significantly faster running speed, as well as its use of far fewer token compared to LLM. The company positions it as particularly suitable for automated tasks, rather than generating text or code.
TypeSafe, co-founder Diogo Almeida, told TechCrunch last month: "We have been doing very well in understanding human language for four years now, but it's of no use for automation, because computers speak a different language."
In addition to Almeida, TypeSafe was also co-founded in 2024 by former OpenAI researcher, former Meta research engineer Sasha Sheng, and engineer as well as entrepreneur Erik Gafni.
