Dallas, October 16th / PRNewswire / -- U.S . Anesthesia Partners , Inc . ( USAP ), the leading specialized anesthesia medical institution in the United States, today celebrates World Anesthesia Day together with clinicians around the world. World Anesthesia Day is held on October 16th of each year, marking the anniversary of the first public demonstration of surgical anesthesia in 1846, which is widely regarded as the birth of this specialty.

"World Anesthesia Day gives us the opportunity to pause and recognize the changes that this field has brought about," said Matt Maloney, a doctor and President of Anesthesia Partners. "Today, when patients enter the operating room, they expect to feel no pain during the surgery and to wake up on the other side of safety. This expectation exists because generations of doctors and researchers have continuously pushed this specialty forward. It's worth taking a moment to realize that none of this has ever been taken for granted."

Before 1846, surgery was more about "enduring" than "accepting" for patients. Since operations had to be completed as quickly as possible, whether the patient could withstand the pain and shock often determined the success or failure of the procedure. As a result, many diseases that could have been treated went untreated, as the risks associated with surgery were just as great as those of the diseases themselves. The day that took place in Boston in October 1846 changed the perspective of both surgeons and patients, and anesthesiology has since continued to evolve.

Anesthesia Development Timeline

  • Ancient practices (from around 4000 BC onwards): Early civilizations, including the Sumerians, Egyptians, and Greeks, used opium poppies and other plant-based substances before and after medical procedures to alleviate pain.
  • In 1842: A doctor from Georgia, Crawford Long, used ether on a patient during a minor surgery, which is considered the earliest known case of ether being used as an anesthetic. However, he did not publish his research results until a few years later.
  • In 1844: Dentist Horace Wells experimented with the use of nitrous oxide, commonly known as "laughing gas," to relieve pain during tooth extraction.
  • October 16, 1846: Boston dentist William T.G. Morton publicly administered ether to a patient at Massachusetts General Hospital, allowing surgeon Dr. John Collins Warren to remove a neck tumor without the patient experiencing the pain associated with earlier surgeries. This event is now known as the "Ether Day" and took place in a place that is still called Ether Dome today, marking the official beginning of surgical anesthesia.
  • In 1847: Scottish physician James Young Simpson introduced chloroform as an alternative anesthetic to ether, which was widely used in Europe for the following decades. Queen Victoria became a supporter of its use due to its application in childbirth.
  • At the end of the 19th century: The administration of anesthesia, which was previously a task performed by surgeons or their assistants, began to transform into an independent field of medical practice, laying the foundation for anesthesia to become a specialized specialty in its own right.
  • From the 1930s to the 1940s: Intravenous anesthetics and muscle relaxants were introduced, making anesthesia more controllable and predictable in increasingly complex surgeries.
  • From the 1950s to the 1960s: Modern inhalation anesthetics, including halothane, replaced older drugs such as ether and chloroform, providing better safety and greater control over the depth of anesthesia.
  • From the 1980s to the 1990s: Pulse oximeters and end-tidal carbon dioxide monitoring became standard equipment in operating rooms, allowing anesthesiologists to continuously and real-time monitor the patient's oxygenation and breathing conditions during surgery.
  • From the 1990s to the 2000s: Regional anesthesia techniques, including nerve block and epidural anesthesia performed under ultrasound guidance, were expanded, reducing dependence on opioid drugs and improving the recovery of many surgical patients.
  • From the 2000s to the 2010s: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols combined anesthesia planning with pre- and postoperative care, reducing hospital stay times, decreasing the need for opioid medications, and improving outcomes for various surgical procedures.
  • From the 2010s to the 2020s: Advances in monitoring technologies, including deep anesthesia monitoring and neuromuscular monitoring, have made drug administration more personalized, leading to faster and clearer recoveries. USAP is at the forefront of the industry in reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with anesthesia.
  • Today, anesthesiologists integrate real-time data, personalized risk assessments, and multi-modal analgesia strategies to tailor anesthesia care to each patient's specific health condition and type of surgery.

U.S. Anesthesia Partners The Chief Clinical Officer, Kurt Jones a doctor, stated: "Looking back at this timeline, the most prominent aspect is that many of these advancements have come from paying closer attention to each individual patient. Although the tools have undergone tremendous changes, the goal has remained the same since 1846: to ensure that patients undergo surgery safely and as comfortably as possible. This is what our team focuses on every day, and it is also what we proudly commemorate on World Anesthesia Day."

Where exactly did the $100 billion spent by Microsoft, Google, and Meta on the AI infrastructure go?
The article points out that when companies such as Microsoft, Google, or Meta announce investments of $100 billion in artificial intelligence, this money does not all flow to NVIDIA. Instead, it is dispersed among a vast industrial chain consisting of chip manufacturers, data center developers, power suppliers, and equipment providers. Some companies receive payments during the infrastructure construction phase, while others generate ongoing revenue after the facilities are put into operation.
