The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has approved the country's first Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) aimed at retail investors (ETF).
The regulatory agency stated on Tuesday that at the time of this approval, interest among the Swiss public in cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin, was on the rise.
Bitcoin ETF — especially in the United States — has expanded the range of investors who can buy and sell this leading cryptocurrency. Through fund shares traded on stock exchanges, investors can gain exposure to this largest cryptocurrency in a safe and regulated manner.
The announcement stated: "As early as 2021, FINMA approved a fund aimed at qualified investors that primarily invests in a basket of cryptocurrencies."
The announcement states: 'Due to Bitcoin's longer transaction history and particularly high trading volume compared to other cryptocurrencies, FINMA approves an exemption from the risk diversification rules under these circumstances.'
FINMA also added: 'At the same time, FINMA emphasizes that investing in Bitcoin – even through approved ETF – still carries a high level of risk.'
The announcement did not disclose which asset management company or bank would launch the product. There are already cryptocurrencies on the Swiss market, such as ETF, that are accessible only to institutional investors or qualified investors.
In the United States, when Bitcoin ETF was approved in 2024, it created one of the most successful initial public offerings (IPOs) in the history of investment tools.
Today, traders, institutions, and retail investors can quickly purchase fund shares that track the price of this leading cryptocurrency, without having to worry about storage issues related to exchanges or digital currencies.
According to CoinGlass data, the asset management scale of such funds managed by Wall Street giants such as BlackRock, Fidelity, and Morgan Stanley has exceeded $97 billion.
