The Trump administration provided a $5 billion loan to Constellation Energy for the expansion of power generation capacity at its eight nuclear power plants. The company stated that most or all of the additional electricity produced by seven of the plants has been purchased by Google, Meta, or Amazon, and the loan may help reduce the financing costs of the project.

The Trump administration will provide $5 billion in loans to Constellation Energy to increase the nuclear power capacity of its eight power plants by 1.1 gigawatts.

Most, if not all, of the additional power generation from these seven power plants has been purchased by Google, Meta, or Amazon.

Constellation indicates that the company plans to use this financing to carry out “uprate” renovations on 11 existing reactors. This is an industry term that refers to expanding capacity by increasing the power generation capability of the reactors. Common practices include using uranium with a higher degree of enrichment, as well as upgrading equipment to handle higher power levels.

The energy company stated that it has committed to investing over $7 billion to add 1,080 megawatts of nuclear power capacity to supply electricity to Google, Amazon, and Meta. In a press release, Constellation mentioned that this loan commitment, which has not yet been finalized, “may reduce” the financing costs of these projects.

These eight power plants include six in Illinois ( Braidwood, Byron, Clinton, Dresden, LaSalle, and Quad Cities ), one in Maryland ( Calvert Cliffs ), and one in Pennsylvania ( Limerick ).

Google has been confirmed as the buyer of additional electricity from this power plant in Pennsylvania and four power plants in Illinois; Amazon is purchasing electricity from a power plant in Maryland; Meta has actually bought all the electricity from the Clinton power plant in Illinois.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Energy described this loan as supporting the provision of “affordable and reliable electricity for American residents and businesses,” but there is currently no evidence to suggest that the new nuclear power capacity will reduce electricity prices for residential users. The announcement from Constellation did not indicate whether these projects would maintain or lower electricity prices, and the company has not confirmed the government's claims to TechCrunch.

Super-large cloud service providers, including Google, Amazon, and Meta, have been seeking additional capacity in the power grid to support their AI data centers. Tech companies are paying a high price for energy and have committed to investing tens of billions of dollars in the coming years. Given that electricity has become a competitive advantage, this estimate may still be conservative.

By reducing the capital costs of these upgrade projects, loans from the U.S. Department of Energy may increase the profits of Constellation, as well as those of these hyperscale cloud service providers, or perhaps both.
