The ECMC Scholars project distributes $1.2 million to high school graduates in Connecticut, Virginia, and Oregon.

This six-year mentorship program begins in high school and extends into higher education, with the aim of ensuring that students receive the support they need to succeed.

Minneapolis, October 29th / PRNewswire / -- More than 200 high school graduates from Connecticut, Virginia, and Oregon have received a total of $1.278 million in funding as part of a transformative education journey that began in their sophomore year of high school. As participants in the ECMC Scholars program, a total of 213 students have recently each received a scholarship of $6,000 to support their higher education studies.

But this financial support is just a part of the overall assistance.

Unlike traditional scholarships that are awarded solely based on academic performance, the selection criteria for ECMC Scholars include potential, character, and a willingness to grow. This program spans six years—two years of high school and four years of university—providing students with a dynamic support system that evolves as they grow.

ECMC Student Success Supervisor Angela Greenlay states: "Scholarships can help students get into university, but financial support alone is not always enough to help them persevere. Through the ECMC Scholars program, students are able to build trustworthy relationships and gain the knowledge, confidence, and continuous support they need to face challenges, maintain progress, and strive to complete their studies."

A six-year model designed for success

The journey of ECMC Scholars begins in 11th grade, where students are paired with a coach hired by their high school. Over the course of two years, they participate in structured programs to explore higher education and career paths, learn how to make informed decisions regarding college costs, and develop the skills necessary for lifelong success. Coaches also receive ongoing training and support from the leaders of the ECMC Scholars program.

After entering university, students will continue to receive personalized guidance from coaches from the higher education stage, which will help them navigate the first two years of their university experience. The project leader of ECMC Scholars will be actively involved throughout the entire four-year university period, providing additional support to ensure that students remain on track until and after graduation.

Real impact, real results

Since 2005, ECMC has provided $23.5 million in scholarships to 3,910 students in Connecticut, Oregon, and Virginia.

Early data shows that the enrollment rate for ECMC Scholars students is 83%, which is significantly higher than the national average of 61%, especially among student groups that are underrepresented. Students who maintain contact with their coaches are also much more likely to re-enroll and continue their studies after interrupting their education, indicating the power of continuous, personalized support.

A model designed to enable the continuous completion of studies

The ECMC Scholars program combines scholarship funds with continuous tutoring from high school to university. This long-term approach helps students overcome challenges, maintain a connection with support systems, and continue to move towards their graduation goals.
