IT News on October 29th: According to Reuters, after releasing several products in just a few weeks, including the new Kindle e-reader and tablet, Amazon cut about 250 jobs on Wednesday in its Devices and Services division (Devices and Services Unit).
Amazon confirmed the news of the layoffs. "We made a difficult decision to reduce a small number of positions," a company spokesperson said, but did not provide further details.
A person familiar with the matter revealed that the number of employees affected by this layoff does not exceed 250, and it mainly focuses on the software development field.
The spokesperson added that this round of layoffs will help the company "improve operational efficiency and better align with our product roadmap." Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Amazon also released a new type of alarm clock and smart photo frame equipped with a Alexa voice assistant.
In accordance with Amazon's usual practice, termination notices in the form of text messages and emails were sent to the affected employees on Wednesday morning. An email sent by Cherilyn Robinson ( Cherie Robinson ), the Vice President of Human Resources for the Devices and Services department, indicated that the company had "conducted a comprehensive review of its organizational structure," which necessitated the reduction of the team size.
IT has noted that earlier this month, Amazon cut approximately 1,000 jobs in its core retail division. The company is scheduled to release its third-quarter financial results after the U.S. stock market closes on Thursday.
