Key Points
- Ethereum Layer 2 focused on privacy, Aztec, has released an upgrade, Aztec Tierra, which fixes a critical vulnerability and adds more security enhancements.
- The new architecture will reduce the message transmission time from Ethereum to Aztec from two minutes to as fast as 12 seconds.
- The upgrade is accompanied by the launch of a number of private applications, covering areas such as payments, transactions, AI, and social networking, including the reintroduction of zk.money; this also coincides with Ethereum's broader efforts to promote privacy.
The privacy-focused Ethereum layer-2 network Aztec has launched a major upgrade that fixes a critical vulnerability from the previous version, doubling the speed of private transactions and facilitating the implementation of a number of applications designed to hide user data.
Aztec Foundation stated on Tuesday that this upgrade, named Aztec Tierra with the code name Alpha V6, brought enhanced security, formal verification of its proof-of-concept system, and faster Ethereum recharge speeds. At the same time, it also updated the brand image.
Aztec is a decentralized two-layer network that boasts over 3,000 validators and supports fully programmable private smart contracts. The project claims that it does not have any privileged access to keys, nor does it have a centralized sorter, which means that no single operator has the ability to view or control user activities.
This upgrade addresses known vulnerabilities from earlier versions, including a critical issue discovered in V5, and incorporates a range of security enhancements. In particular, it includes a security testing framework driven by AI as well as formal verification of core encryption components – a process that uses mathematical methods to prove that the code behaves as expected.
This move also reflects that the entire crypto industry is intensifying code reinforcement on a broader scale, as the AI tool makes it easier to detect vulnerabilities.
In terms of performance, Aztec indicates that private transactions can now generate proofs on ordinary devices within about 1 second on the client side, which is twice as fast as before; at the same time, the new architecture reduces the message transmission time from Ethereum to Aztec from an average of 2 minutes to a fastest of 12 seconds, thereby accelerating recharges and cross-chain activities.
Aztec Foundation, co-founder, and CEO Zac Williamson stated: "Privacy should not be something that you have to actively request or rely on others to protect. It should be built into the network itself."
This upgrade is also accompanied by the launch of a number of private applications, covering areas such as payment, trading, AI, and social networking.
Leading the way is zk.money. This is a private payment and savings application developed by Aztec Labs, and the team has restarted this product this year. With the faster messaging capabilities of Tierra, users can directly top up from any Ethereum wallet without the need for complex bridging operations.
Other applications include: Galactica for private AI inference, Nemi for private perpetual contract trading, a private browser wallet named Nulo, and Rolling Chat – a private message board based on the experiments of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin himself.
This release comes at a time when the Ethereum ecosystem is once again pushing forward the development of privacy. Buterin has proposed a plan to create a “cryptographic world computer” and is working to significantly reduce the cost of privacy technologies that are resistant to quantum computing; meanwhile, another independent team has spun off a for-profit company to promote the adoption of privacy technologies by institutions.
Aztec raised $17 million in an earlier round of financing to build its network. The project is betting that privacy will become a default feature of Ethereum, rather than an additional option.
