If an agreement is reached, this route will replace the current north-south shipping lanes. The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister mentioned that Oman has suggested designing a route that would be under 50% Iranian control and 50% Oman control. However, Iran believes this does not address their concerns; they argue that the routes into the sea should be under complete Iranian control, as should a portion of the routes out to sea. If Oman does not accept Iran's proposal, the strait will remain closed, and Iran is prepared to resume hostilities.
