US data center energy bill stalled due to grid cost issues

According to CoinMeta, recently, a bipartisan data center energy bill in the U.S. Senate reached a deadlock among legislators over debates regarding protecting Americans from rising electricity grid and power costs. Senator Martin Heinrich prevented Senator Jon Hester's attempt to advance the "Electricity Bills Protection Act" through unanimous consent on Thursday. The bill requires states to consider standards that would make large power users (including data centers) bear the incremental costs of new power generation, transmission, and other grid infrastructure. However, the implementation of this bill is mainly up to the states rather than being a mandatory federal requirement. Heinrich believes this approach is not thorough enough, and has therefore pushed for his "Grid Savings Act," which would grant more power to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to ensure that large power users pay for the upgrades necessitated by their demand. As artificial intelligence companies compete to build infrastructure that consumes large amounts of electricity, this controversy has become increasingly important. According to an update from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for 2026, it is estimated that by 2030, data centers in the United States will account for about 11.8% of the country's total electricity consumption.
