ECB pushes to abolish the 60% stablecoin deposit rule for MICA banks
2026-09-22 20:15:00
According to CoinMeta, the European Central Bank and the central banks of all 27 EU member states are calling for the abolition of mandatory minimum bank deposit requirements for stablecoin issuers. As reported by Reuters on September 22 in a joint statement, current regulatory requirements for the market of crypto assets stipulate that issuers of digital currency tokens must typically retain at least 30% of their reserve assets as deposits with credit institutions. For important digital currency tokens, this threshold is raised to 60%. The central banks question whether forcing such a large proportion of reserves to be held in commercial banks merely shifts liquidity risks from stablecoin issuers to the banking system.
