SEC Tightens Token Repurchase Guidelines towards a Decentralized Network

According to CoinMeta, on Monday, SEC employees tightened the guidelines for crypto token repurchases, limiting them to networks that are functioning properly and “without a central authority.” The company’s finance department revised its crypto FAQ on September 28th, adding the phrase “and without a central authority” to the description. After the update, the document stated that if a system meets these two conditions, “an issuer’s announcement of a non-security crypto asset repurchase plan does not constitute a statement or commitment to make necessary management efforts.” The rest of the response remained unchanged. For networks that are not yet functioning properly, SEC employees still indicated that a repurchase announcement could be seen as such a commitment “if the issuer considers the repurchase to be creating earnings or returns for token holders.”
