CoinMeta data: U.S. national debt has now exceeded $40 trillion, surpassing the combined government debts of China, Japan, the UK, and France. Global debt has reached a record $365.5 trillion. According to data from the International Finance Institute, global debt increased by more than $10 trillion in the first half of this year. The U.S. federal debt surpassed $40 trillion for the first time in August and continues to rise. According to the Treasury Department, about $32.3 trillion is held by the public, with another $7.8 trillion held internally by the government. China's government debt is approximately $22.3 trillion, Japan's is around $9 trillion, the UK's is about $4.4 trillion, and France's is between $4.1 and $4.3 trillion. Global government interest payments have climbed to about $3.3 trillion per year, and higher bond yields make new borrowing more expensive. The yield on U.S. 10-year Treasuries recently reached 5.34%, the highest level since 2002.
